Cyclocross
Cyclocross is a unique, fast-paced and wildly entertaining form of bike racing. Courses are mostly off-road, twisting through parks, bushland and open fields, with the occasional stretch of pavement thrown in to keep you on your toes. Riders tackle an ever-changing mix of grass, dirt, mud, gravel, sand and whatever else the course designer decides to dish up — sometimes all in the same lap.
Unlike traditional road or mountain bike races, cyclocross events run on time rather than distance. Races usually range from 30 minutes for beginners to around 60 minutes at the elite level. After riders complete the first lap, officials determine the total number of laps to hit the target race duration, so final race length can vary slightly depending on course conditions and race pace.
CX courses are compact circuits packed with action. Riders weave through tight corners, power across open straights and negotiate a variety of features designed to test skill, speed and adaptability. Barriers — typically 40 cm or lower and spaced 4–6 metres apart — often force riders to hop off, run, and remount. Skilled riders may bunny-hop the obstacles, gaining precious seconds and plenty of crowd applause. Many courses include short, punchy hills, sand pits, mud bogs and off-camber sections that are tricky or impossible to ride, requiring riders to shoulder their bike and run. Running has become less common in modern CX, but when the mud turns soup-thick or the sand gets deep, it can still be the fastest route forward.
Cyclocross is technically a bike race, but it’s just as much a mindset and a lifestyle. It’s about grabbing a bike — any bike — and attacking whatever terrain lies ahead with agility, creativity and grit. CX bikes also make excellent adventure machines, perfect for exploring gravel roads, parks and trails when you’re not racing.
